new mode of programming: walk, talk and code
As someone who works late into the night, I rarely go outside during the day. My sleeping schedule is 100% opposite of what most experts recommend. I sleep at 4 and wake during the middle of the day.
Today was one of the fortunate days where my wife and I went on a walk. We like to walk outside as it relaxes both of us. Before catching up with her, a thought came into my mind. With Claude Code and any other agentic system that is connected to the cloud, I can now program and build during my walks! This is a very novel and new experience.
Currently, I am working on a project where I created an environment in pure C for a simple reinforcement learning task. Here, I wanted to explore a few ideas within the realm of RL and step up my game so that I can work on further interesting problems. So, just as we started, I pulled out my phone for a brief moment, connected to Claude Code, and asked it to create a Python binding with a simple forward loop. I hit enter, put the phone away, and fully focused on enjoying the walk.
Once I returned, it felt kind of exciting to see a boilerplate of the training loop written for me. I was getting things done while having a nice time with my partner. This is a new feeling, and I will probably enjoy it as these tools become more powerful.
Then another thought occurred to me. If I have a bunch of tasks I was always curious about, I can start building on those tasks in a similar manner, where I go on a walk, write an instruction, return to a pseudo-working program, and then pick up from there. This is quite exciting to me, and I am looking forward to the possibilities.
